Handling your annual financial statements yourself?

Risks & pitfalls

Many small business owners consider preparing their annual financial statements themselves to save costs. While accounting software can simplify certain aspects, proper financial reporting requires great attention to detail and a deep understanding of Swiss accounting regulations. Errors in financial statements can lead to compliance issues, penalties, and reputational damage.

Large companies with dedicated accounting departments can typically handle their annual financial statements internally. However, for smaller businesses without the same resources or expertise, it makes sense to entrust this task to a fiduciary or a professional financial service provider like Nexova AG.

By outsourcing your financial reports to Nexova, you benefit from expert guidance, full regulatory compliance, and peace of mind. Our team ensures that your reports are error-free, legally compliant, and accurately reflect your company’s financial position. This helps you avoid costly mistakes and focus on what truly matters—growing your business.

Understanding Swiss Withholding Tax: What Is It, Who Pays It, and How do You Reclaim It?

Withholding tax (Verrechnungssteuer) is a distinctive feature of Switzerland’s fiscal system. It is a federal tax that is primarily designed to reduce tax evasion on capital income. It is withheld directly at the source and is usually refunded to the taxpayer if they correctly declare their investment income. In this article, we’ll break down how Swiss withholding tax works, which income it affects, how you can reclaim it, and what you should watch out for—whether you're a Swiss resident, an international investor, or a company operating in Switzerland.

We are very satisfied with Nexova as our trustee. Thanks to the Teams group chat, I can always count on very fast response times (of a few minutes). The Teams Chat group is great. Fortunately, this is not the case with Nexova.

What is an annual financial statement?

An annual financial statement provides an overview of a company’s financial situation and is prepared at the end of the fiscal year. It includes the balance sheet, income statement, and notes, and shows the company’s assets, liabilities, income, expenses, and the annual financial result.

What is included in an annual financial statement?

An annual financial statement consists of the balance sheet, income statement, and notes. Depending on the company’s size and legal form, a cash flow statement or management report may also be required.

Who is required to prepare an annual financial statement in Switzerland?

All businesses in Switzerland must maintain financial records. Sole proprietors with revenue under CHF 500,000 can use simplified bookkeeping, but companies exceeding this threshold, as well as all legal entities (e.g., GmbHs and AGs), must prepare full financial statements following Swiss accounting standards.

  • Sole proprietorships and partnerships with annual revenue below CHF 500,000 may keep simplified accounts using a basic income-expense and asset overview (also known as a "milk book" method).
  • Sole proprietorships and partnerships with annual revenue of CHF 500,000 or more, as well as all legal entities (e.g., GmbH and AG), must use double-entry bookkeeping and prepare a full annual financial statement in accordance with Art. 957 et seq. of the Swiss Code of Obligations.

When are annual financial statements due in Switzerland?

The annual financial statement must be completed and approved within six months after the end of the fiscal year. Within this period, the company must finalize the statement, have it audited if necessary, and submit it along with the tax return to the appropriate tax authority.

Can Nexova review my annual financial statement if it was prepared by another fiduciary?

Yes, Nexova can review annual financial statements prepared by another fiduciary to ensure accuracy, compliance with legal requirements, and adherence to Swiss regulations. If we identify any errors or inefficiencies, we can provide recommendations or assist with corrections.

What are the risks of preparing my own annual financial statement?

Preparing annual financial statements without professional expertise can lead to mistakes, incorrect tax calculations, and potential penalties if regulations are not fully met. Professional support ensures accuracy, legal compliance, and provides strategic insights into your company’s financial health.

Can I outsource my entire accounting, not just the annual financial statements?

Yes! Many businesses are unaware that outsourcing the entire accounting function is often more cost-effective and efficient than outsourcing only the annual financial statements. Nexova offers comprehensive accounting solutions that ensure effective financial management throughout the year.

How much does it cost to outsource the preparation of the annual financial statement?

Pricing depends entirely on the complexity of your financial records and reporting requirements. Contact us for a customized quote.
